Build the Future of Energy
The world’s energy needs are growing. At Type One Energy, we’re working to meet that challenge with fusion—the same process that powers the sun. As an intern, you’ll do more than watch from the sidelines. You’ll work alongside engineers, physicists, project managers, and business leaders to solve real problems and contribute to the development of fusion technology. From engineering and physics to project management and corporate functions, you’ll gain hands-on experience while helping move fusion from an ambitious idea toward a new source of energy for the world. Your work could help power what comes next.

What makes our internships stand out
An internship at Type One Energy is a chance to be part of something few people get to experience. You’ll work alongside some of the brightest minds in fusion, collaborate across disciplines, and gain a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to turn ambitious ideas into real-world technology. You won’t be limited to one team or one perspective; you’ll have opportunities to learn from people across the company, take on new challenges, and discover skills you didn’t know you had. From your first day to your last, you’ll be encouraged to ask questions, bring your ideas to the table, and make your work count. You’ll leave with more than experience—you’ll leave with a clearer sense of what you’re capable of and a community of people who helped you get there.
Where our internships make a difference
ENGINEERING
Work alongside engineers developing the systems and components that will make commercial fusion possible. Interns can apply what theyíre learning in school to real engineering challenges, contribute to design and analysis, and gain experience working across disciplines as ideas move from concept toward a functioning fusion power plant.
PHYSICS
Put your physics knowledge to work on some of the most complex problems in fusion. Interns can support research, modeling, simulations, and analysis that help us better understand plasma behavior and optimize stellarator performance—contributing to the scientific foundation behind our fusion power plant designs.
CORPORATE FUNCTIONS
See what it takes to build a company around breakthrough technology. Whether you’re working in marketing, finance, HR, legal, communications, or another corporate function, you’ll contribute to the systems and strategies that help Type One grow, collaborate with partners, and turn technical innovation into a business capable of bringing fusion to the grid.
PROJECT MANAGEMENTS
Help bring big ideas together. Interns can work alongside project and program teams to coordinate people, schedules, resources, and priorities across complex projects, gaining firsthand experience in how teams turn ambitious technical goals into organized, executable plans. Type One’s projects bring together engineers, physicists, national laboratories, universities, utilities, and industry partners, making collaboration a critical part of the work.
The Intern Experience
“My work feels extremely important. Developing the skills to be confident in my defined scope is riveting but connecting with others adjacent to my work and seeing how it all comes together is also really energizing.”
Jhovanna Garcia

“What excites me most about fusion is the combination of scientific challenge, technological innovation, and global impact. Beyond the intellectual challenge, fusion has the potential to provide abundant, clean energy that could significantly benefit both the environment.”
Beruktawit Gebreamlak

“What Type One Energy is doing is groundbreaking. I truly believe that fusion energy is the future and will change the world for the better. I’m excited to play a part in that endeavor.”
Olivia Miles

“The best part about my job is knowing my work directly serves a team of brilliant people who have welcomed me and taught me about all the aspects that go into designing a stellarator.”
Eric Andrews

FAQ
Internships are offered across a variety of departments each summer including mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, physics, plasma diagnostics, and corporate functions such as marketing & communications, intellectual property, supply chain and human resources. The types of internships vary per cycle.
Yes. We offer competitive pay based on years of education completed and work experience.
We offer summer internships from May-August. Under certain circumstances, internships can be extended for a certain period of time.
Internships open in the fall around September-October.
Our internships are located at our US offices and global offices: Knoxville, TN (HQ), Madison, WI, and Vancouver, BC.
From day one, you’ll be paired with a mentor who will show you the ropes and support your project work and research throughout the summer. We start with orientation—culture, mission, values, and Fusion 101—so everyone’s on the same page. You’ll connect with other interns, join company outings, and wrap up with an end-of-internship project overview presentation. By the end, you’ll have a real sense of how fusion energy gets built and what it takes to make it happen.
Yes. We make a conscious effort to connect interns to full time roles whenever opportunities are available.
